This Saturday night at the Oyster Bed Speedway the Street Stock Division will be running their biggest race of the year in the David Lambe Memorial. The highly coveted “Piston Cup” will be contested and previous winners include a who’s who of Island Stock Car talent. Previous winners include, Darren MacKinnon, Stephen Gass, Geoff Boyle, and Mark MacLean.
MacLean will be tough to beat in the extended feature. Not only is he the defending points Champion but he is also the defending champion of the race. MacLean has been solid in his defense of the title so far racking up three heat wins plus a feature win. With a total of 16 top three finishes MacLean’s car has a great chance of being in the mix at the end.
Over the past few seasons fans have watched Alex Sheehan improve in the Street Stock ranks. Currently he is contending for the points race only 13 points behind MacLean and has been just as consistent as the defending Champion. Recording a heat and feature win so far this season, Sheehan has been steady scoring 6 second place finishes along with 6 thirds. So far the month of August has not fared out very well for the driver as he posted some of his lowest point totals of the season over the last three weekends so look for a bounce back this weekend as he pushes for the Points lead.
At the start of the season Colton Ford jumped into a new car in hopes that it would help catapult him into contention for a points Championship. So far Ford has enjoyed his best season at the Speedway, currently leading the division in total wins with 9 and is only one of two drivers this season to capture more than one feature win. He also leads the division in top three finishes with a total of 17. This has put him in the Championship hunt only sixteen points behind the leader. Had it not been for two nights of racing over the past three weeks where he had major car troubles scoring the lowest points totals of the season Ford might very well be in the lead. He has some work to do but a points Championship is a very good possibility for the driver from Oyster Bed.
Veteran driver Jamie Stewart who is in fourth place, 31 points out of the lead has been a model of true consistency. He has held down a top five spot for most of the season despite not having grabbed a checkered flag yet this season. Five times this season he has finished second adding in four thirds as well and numerous top five finishes. Despite being only 31 points out of the lead, Stewart will have to grab some checkered flags if he wants to be able to make a charge for the points Championship.
Some other contenders to keep an eye on during the David Lambe Memorial will be Troy Burke who is second in the division in wins with eight. If Burke had not missed the second weekend of racing he would certainly be in the top five in points. Keaton Vessey has two feature wins to his credit this season including last weekends feature. Plus Mike Duskey has been the only driver this season to complete the triple win so he may be a contender in the final laps.
Racing begins Saturday night with all four local divisions at the Speedway at 6 pm, featuring the David Lambe Memorial Race with the “Piston Cup” being awarded to the feature winner.
