(SYDNEY, NS – Friday, July 3rd) – Cape Breton Miners Memorial Speedway will play host to their second stock car racing event of the year, the Gillis Home Hardware 100 on Saturday, July 4th at 2pm. The action packed short track race at the Sydney oval will feature competition in three classes; the NAPA Sportsman Series, Cape Breton Trailer Sales Street Stocks and Atlantic Cat/Hewitt Rentals Mini Stocks.

After two events on the NAPA Sportsman Series schedule, Shawn Waterfield of Sydney, Nova Scotia leads the way. The series visits both Cape Breton Miners Memorial Speedway in Sydney and Riverside International Speedway in Antigonish. It has been the strength of two second place finishes that has put Waterfield on top of the standings over reigning NAPA Sportsman Series titlist Chris Reid.

“It’s pretty crazy that we are the point leaders with so much stiff competition on this series,” said Waterfield on heading in to Saturday’s Gillis Home Hardware 100 with the championship lead. “We are taking it one lap at a time, focusing on the race ahead of us. This Saturday is only the third race of the series, so I guess you could say there are lots of laps left in this racing tunnel.”

Waterfield has a two point lead on Chris Reid (Fort McMurray, AB), with his brother Kyle Reid (Fort McMurray, AB) in third. Darren Price (Main-A-Dieu, NS) is fourth in the NAPA Sportsman Series championship chase, with rookies Jason Lund (Dutch Brook, NS) and Joey Rudderham (Marion Bridge, NS) tied for fifth in the standings.

Vance MacDonald (Sydney, NS) was the driver to beat on opening day in the Cape Breton Trailer Sales Street Stock class. He topped a field which included John Halliday (Sydney, NS) and Jeff Adamsson (Lower L’Ardoise, NS) on the podium on Sunday, June 7th. Feature racing in the Cape Breton Trailer Sales Street Stock division is presented by Saf-way Auto Parts.

Reigning Atlantic Cat/Hewitt Rentals Mini Stock Rookie of the Year Kody Quinn (Glace Bay, NS) topped a podium of widely traveled four cylinder stars in June to take his first win at home in 2015. Quinn roared to the line in the Ramsay’s Honda 25 last month over multi-time New Brunswick champion JR Lawson (Shubenacadie, NS) and Mike Weagle (Salisbury, NB). Top five finishes by the 2014 Atlantic Cat/Hewitt Rentals Mini Stock champion Josh Benac (North Sydney, NS) and Brandon MacMillan (Glace Bay, NS) have them well within the hunt for the championship with four races to go. Entries from as far away as Moncton, New Brunswick and Dartmouth, Nova Scotia have expressed intent to compete in the Ramsay’s Honda 25 on Saturday afternoon.

Following Saturday’s event, the focus shifts to the month of August, where two stock car events will bookend the month on Saturday, August 1st and Saturday, August 29th. Fans are urged to mark these dates on their calendar as the summer heats up on the tight Sydney oval!

Admission prices for Saturday’s second event of the season are $20 for adults over the age of 19, $8 for students aged 13 to 18 with free admission to children 12 and under. Pit admission is $25 and restricted to those 18 years and older. Pit gates open for competitors at 8am, with racing beginning at 2pm.
