Eastern Super Mini Cup Series To Kick off With Kaat Auto Sales 20 in Miramichi Sunday‏

Series Release

The 2015 racing season is about to get underway for the Eastern Super Mini Cup Series! Sunday afternoon the green flag will fly for the first time since September. The Season Opener at Speedway Miramichi will be highlighted by the Kaat Auto Sales 20 for the series. In addition to the 20 lap feature, 2 heat races will be contested.

Being the 1st of 8 scheduled races on the schedule, a stout field of drivers are expected to be in attendance to begin the quest of becoming the next series champion. Defending series champ Amanda Wheatley is running in the Street Stock class this year, meaning a new champion will be crowned. Historically, the eventual champion has swept all feature races at Speedway Miramichi during their championship season. Since no former champions are racing in 2015, we will see a 1st time Speedway Miramichi feature winner Sunday. 4 races are scheduled at Speedway Miramichi this year, so knowing how to get around this track will be even more critical to winning a championship.

Despite never winning a feature race in Miramichi, a number of drivers have taken checkered flags in heat & semi races. Among those are Chris Wilson, Kirk Sheasgreen, Steven Curtis, and Derek Goodwin, all of whom call Speedway Miramichi their home track. Each of these drivers are always fast when the series rolls into Speedway Miramichi, and they all hope to start their season on a high note and take the victory in front of the hometown crowd. However, they will have the rest of the field looking to steal a win on Sunday.

Defending rookie of the year Mark Ferguson is hoping to find victory lane in the first race of his sophomore season. He is the only driver not from Miramichi that has competed at Speedway Miramichi in a mini cup car before, but don’t count the rest of the field out! Driving for Don Gaudet Sunday, Matt Watson is hoping to extend his streak of 4 podium finishes in 4 career starts. Matt is expected to share driving duties with Don in 2015. Former Speedway Miramichi 4 Cylinder feature winner Mike Weagle will make his first start in a mini cup car Sunday, driving the car Amanda Wheatley took to the championship last year. Last, but certainly not least, Kyle Mahar will be making his first oval track start Sunday. Kyle is excited for the challenge ahead of him, and he hopes for a strong run.

Last weekend, the drivers got a chance to shake down their cars at Petty International Raceway with a test session. 5 drivers took part and if it was any indication of what’s to come, we will be in for a show this weekend. All drivers posted competitive and close lap times, but it was Steven Curtis recording the fastest lap. The practice didn’t go without incident though. Late in the session Chris Wilson spun and hit a curb, receiving some front end damage to his car. However, he expects his car to be repaired and ready for the Season Opener Sunday.

Racing action gets underway Sunday May 31st at 3pm! Grandstand admission is $15 for adults, $10 for youth 8-17, and children 7 and under are free! Joining the series at Speedway Miramichi will be the Street Stock and 4 Cylinder divisions, the Atlantic Modified Tour, as well as demolition events. Come on out for a great afternoon of racing! In the event of poor weather Sunday, be sure to stay tuned to the Speedway Miramichi and Eastern Super Mini Cup Series Facebook pages.
