(Sydney, NS – September 24th, 2014) – Cape Breton Miners Memorial Speedway is gearing up for the third race event of their 2014 season on Saturday, September 27th. The Sydney, Nova Scotia oval will play host to the Gillis Home Hardware 100, the sixth race on the prestigious NAPA Sportsman Series, along with regular point paying features in the Cape Breton Trailer Sales Street Stock and the Cat Rental Store Mini Stock divisions. Racing action is slated to go green at 3pm with qualifying heat races to set the field for what will be three competitive features of stock car racing under the wonderful September sun.
While the NAPA Sportsman Series is led into Cape Breton Miners Memorial Speedway by Dale Richardson (Stellarton), it has been Chris Reid (Fort McMurray, AB) that has had the winning combination in the first two races at the track. Richardson sailed to a dominating win at Riverside International Speedway the last time the series raced on September 6th with Chris Reid’s car not finishing the race due to crash damage. The result is a 23 point deficit for Reid to make up on the #55 Dartmouth Metals and Bottles Chevrolet.
Squeaking into second in points with Reid’s misfortune is Dave Timmons of Inverness. Timmons, who enters 21 points in the rearview of Richardson and a slim two points up on Reid, was on the podium at the end of the August running of the Gillis Home Hardware 100 and a well timed win on Saturday would more than put him in the championship discussion with one event to go following this weekend’s races.
Darren Price and Shawn Waterfield, both of Sydney, complete the top five in points heading into competition Saturday at their home oval. Waterfield brought his #23 car home in second place on August 30th.
Joey Rudderham’s win on August 30th in the Cape Breton Trailer Sales Street Stock put him to the top of the standings at the halfway point in the season by a single point over season opener winner Mike MacLeod. Neither can rest on their point standing Saturday though, as Vance MacDonald and Mike Roziki are well within striking distance and will be bringing their skills to the oval in an attempt to unseat the top two in the standings.
A big field of 16 The Cat Rental Store Mini Stocks took the green flag on August 30th, with rookie Kody Quinn taking his second consecutive victory at his home track. The youngster, who is widely traveled this season and recently picked up the NAPA Rookie of the Year Award at Petty International Raceway (NB), will be looking to keep his season perfect at home with another clean sweep Saturday. Josh Benac and Brandon MacMillan are Quinn’s two closest competitors in the point standings heading into Saturday.
With most race tracks wrapped up in the Maritimes for 2014, the field for this Saturday’s and the season finale on Saturday, October 18th are expected to be augmented by visiting cars over the next two races. Last time out, Shane Coffen from Newfoundland made his first career NAPA Sportsman Series start and Patricia Taylor of Riverview, New Brunswick has been a familiar face in the Cat Rental Store Mini Stocks.
At intermission, fans will be treated to an exhibition from the Fast Go Karts group of Sydney.
Racing action will heat up the oval beginning at 3pm on Saturday afternoon. Main gates open at 1pm for spectators with pit gates swinging open for competitors at 9am and practice beginning at 11am. Adult admission for Saturday’s third event of the season is $18, student admission for those 13 to 18 years old is $8 and children 12 and under are admitted free. Pit admission is $25 and restricted to those 18 years and older.
Mark it on your schedule now, Saturday, October 18th is shaping up to be one of the biggest racing events in recent Cape Breton history! With the race being the final stock car racing event in Atlantic Canada for the season, big fields of traveling cars are expected as everyone will be looking to get one last run in for 2014. The race will also mark the point finale for both of Cape Breton Miners Memorial Speedway’s house divisions and the NAPA Sportsman Series.
