Your Need To Know Guide to the Mike Stevens Memorial at Petty International Raceway

Track Release – September 17th

RIVER GLADE, NB (September 17, 2014) – Petty International Raceway will host its season finale this Saturday and Sunday with the inaugural Mike Stevens Memorial 150 Weekend, sponsored by R. Stevens Mechanical. Highlights are expected to include the 150-lap pro stock feature and the crowning of six Petty racing division champions.

The Mike Stevens Memorial 150 on Saturday is shaping up to be a star-studded tribute to the late Mike Stevens with more than 25 pro stock racers expected to enter including three Parts for Trucks Pro Stock Tour (PST) champions (John Flemming – Halifax, NS, Shawn Tucker – Fredericton, and Shawn Turple – Enfield, NS), as well as Jonathan Hicken (Montague, PE) – a four-time winner on the PST circuit this year.

Dave O’Blenis (Boundary Creek), a multi-time pro stock champion and race winner who considers Petty home turf is also on the expected entry list, as are local racers Robbie Fraser (Riverview), Michael Kyle (Sussex), Glyn Nott (Burton), Paul Gahan (St. Mary’s), Tim Rodgers (Upper Coverdale), Sarah McKay – PST Rookie of the Year (Quispamsis), Jason Carnahan (Moncton), Kevin Moore (Fredericton), and Chris Duncan (Hampton).

The Mike Stevens Memorial 150 is the last points event of the season for the Petty Pro Stock division which sees Duncan leading Ken MacKenzie by only one point. O’Blenis is third, seven behind MacKenzie and Rodgers is just three behind in fourth. Kyle is fifth, seven behind Rodgers.

Besides pro stocks, Saturday’s show will see a 100-lap feature for the Napa Cmax Sportsman to determine the 2014 division champion. Russell Smith Jr. leads that battle by eight points over Laurie Cormier, and O’Blenis (doing double-duty in pro stock and sportsman) sits third – five behind Cormier.

On Sunday afternoon four more Petty racing division champions will be decided along with a 50-lap feature for the Atlantic Modified Tour.

Cory Hall leads the Leisure Days RV Bandoleros standings by seven markers over Cole Tanner. Adam Meehan and Braden Langille are tied for third – just one point behind Tanner and Ashton Tucker is just one behind them. Courtney O’Blenis (Dave’s daughter) is just two points behind Tucker.

In Mister Transmission Mini Stocks it is JR Lawson on top with a 16-point advantage over Brad Daley. Patricia Taylor is third, only 11 markers behind Daley.

The Petty Street Stock division sees Ken MacKenzie Jr. leading Alexandra O’Blenis (also Dave’s daughter) by just 11 points heading into the final event. Mike Duskey is third, three behind O’Blenis.

Mike Stevens, a multi-time PST winner from Salisbury, passed away August 4, 2013 after being involved in a crash during a race at a track in Prince Edward Island; he was just 30 years old. His life, and his tragic passing, left a mark on the Maritime racing community. He attended Petty Raceway as a boy so having the memorial event at the facility is a natural fit. Members of Stevens’ family, including his wife Sharon and sons Brody and David, as well as his race team will be in attendance. Winners of all the weekends feature races will receive a Mike Stevens Memorial trophy.

A complete pro stock expected entry list along with Petty racing division point standings, and much more about this weekend and the facility, can be found online at

Racing starts at 4 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday . There is plenty of free parking for those with RV’s who want to spend the weekend.

Story – September 15th

Petty International Raceway will welcome the best in Atlantic Canadian stock car racing to the Moncton area this weekend, Saturday, September 20th and Sunday, September 21st, as the track hosts their final event of the season, the Mike Stevens Memorial weekend.

Traditionally one of the biggest “end of season” events in the region, this year is shaping up to be no exception. The highlight on the weekend, the Mike Stevens Memorial Pro Stock 150, boasts an expected entry list of 30 drivers from around the region. The list of expected entries for the Pro Stock race features an All Star type field, with seven of the top ten teams from the RE/MAX Group Four Realty Pro Stock class at Speedway 660 and nine of the top ten Parts for Trucks Pro Stock Tour drivers represented in the 30 car list. Of the 19 races contested between the two sanctioning bodies in 2014, 16 feature wins are accounted for in Saturday’s field.

Leading the field include Speedway 660 titlist Dave O’Blenis (Boundary Creek, NB) and Rookie of the Year Cole Boudreau (Chipman, NB) along with Parts for Trucks Tour champion John Flemming (Halifax, NS) and Rookie of the Year Sarah McKay (Quispamsis, NB). Jonathan Hicken (Brudenell, PE) has made Petty Raceway his playground as of late, winning two of the three Pro Stock Tour races contested at Petty Raceway this season and will be joined in the field by another 2014 winner on the high banks in touring competition in Dylan Blenkhorn (Truro, NS).

Part-time racer Lonnie Sommerville (Barnesville, NB) will be gunning for the victory at Petty International Raceway after a fifth place finish in the Re/Max 250 earlier this month at Speedway 660. Scotia Speedworld Dartmouth Dodge Sportsman sophomore DJ Casey (Prospect Road, NS) will be making his Pro Stock debut at the helm of the #44 Oval Outlaw Racing Chevrolet on Saturday afternoon. Oyster Bed Speedway Central Engine Services Late Model point leader Robbie MacEwen (Sherwood, PE) will also be making the trek across the Confederation Bridge with his Pro Stock in tow for the 150-lap affair.

As if that wasn’t enough, like the other house divisions on the card for the weekend, the Mike Stevens Memorial Pro Stock 150 will serve as the final point race for the Petty Pro Stock division. Chris Duncan (Hampton, NB) leads Ken MacKenzie (Sailsbury, NB) by a single point. Eight points behind Duncan sits O’Blenis in third, with Tim Rodgers (Upper Coverdale, NB) and Michael Kyle (Sussex, NB) just three and ten points, respectively, behind O’Blenis. With a point system that separates every on track position by a single point, the landscape of the point standings could change greatly as a track champion is crowed after 150-laps.

Fans can expect to see that All Star feel to trickle down through each of Petty’s house divisions. The NAPA CMax Sportsman field will run 100 laps on Saturday, while the Leisure Days RV Bandoleros, Mister Transmission Mini Stocks and Street Stocks will run 50-lap features on Sunday, each split into two 25-lap segments. Cory Hall (Jolicure, NB, Bandolero), JR Lawson (Shubenacadie, NS, Mini Stocks), Kenny Mackenzie Jr (Salisbury, NB, Street Stock) and Russell Smith Jr (Lakeside, NS, Sportsman) will each try to defend their point lead with extra entries expected in all fields. While no official entry lists are available, interest from all over the Maritimes has been expressed in the support classes for the weekend.

The Atlantic Modified Tour will also contest a 50-lap point paying event on their series on Sunday to close off the weekend. Ryan Messer (Harvey, NB) was the winner the last time the series paid a visit to the high banked oval in August.

Tickets for the Mike Stevens Memorial Weekend will be available at the gate on raceday. Unserviced camping is available at the track and is free of charge.
