Turple Triumphs at Speedway 660

Track and Series Releases/Photo by McCarthy Photographic

(Fredericton, NB, July 12, 2014) Shawn Turple (Enfield, NS) won his second race of the Parts for Trucks Pro Stock Tour season Saturday night at Speedway 660 in Geary, New Brunswick. Turple, a two-time series champion, inherited the lead on Lap 72 when then leader Shawn Tucker (Fredericton, NB) was relegated to the back of the field after jumping his third restart of the caution filled race. Tucker managed to make his way back to finish third behind John Flemming (Halifax, NS), who also came from the back of the field after a flat tire forced him to pit in the first half of the event. Dylan Blenkhorn (Truro, NS) and Jonathan Hicken (Brudenell, PE) dodged a last lap melee in turn three to take the fourth and fifth place spots at the finish.

To start the day, Blenkhorn became a four- time Atlantic Tiltload Time Trial Winner after a quick 13.635 second lap. It was Flemming that earned the right to start the Main Feature on the pole after crossing the line first in the King Freight Dash For Cash. Two exciting Dartmouth Dodge Heat Races determined the starting positions for the remainder of the field which saw Darren MacKinnon (Charlottetown, PE) best Turple  on a last lap pass and Dave O’Blenis (Boundary Creek, NB) win a three wide battle to the checkers over Matt Harris (Fredericton Junction, NB) and Cole Butcher (Porter’s Lake, NS). Tucker led 51 laps to take home the Linde Most Laps Led Award. Turple improved his starting position by 8 spots to take the Exide Batteries Hard Charger Award.

After five events, Flemming will maintain the point lead by five points over Tucker. Turple, Blenkhorn, and Proude complete the top five in the standings after leaving Speedway 660.

Shawn Turple finally got back to the Riverview Ford Victory Lane at Speedway 660. On Saturday night, Turple won the Irving Oil Blending and Packaging 100 in front of one the biggest crowds of the season.

“We haven’t won here since 2008 and it’s nice to get back to victory lane in a Parts for Trucks Pro Stock Tour race in front of these great Speedway 660 fans” said Shawn Turple. “Our car was a little tight at the end and I was glad to be able to hold on for the win at one of my favourite tracks.”
John Flemming, the early race leader, pitted for a flat-tire about forty laps into the race, but roared back for an impressive second place finish. Shawn Tucker, who was penalized for an infraction on a re-start with thirty laps to go, came back to finish third.

“All things considered we’re happy to finish second tonight because it could have been a lot worse after that tire went down early in the race” said Flemming. “Turple was tough and Tucker was coming hard at the end, so we’ll take second and consider it a good point night.”

Dylan Blenkhorn won his fourth Atlantic Tiltload Time Trials of the season on Saturday night. Flemming won the King Freight Dash for Cash, while Darren MacKinnon and Dave O’Blenis won the Parts for Trucks Pro Stock Tour heat races.

There was plenty of other exciting action at Speedway 660 on Saturday night. Matt Rodgers won the Martin’s Home Heating Sportsman Division feature ahead of his brother Andrew and George Jamieson who finished third. Jason Shannon and Dawson McIntee won the Sportsman heat races. Five time champion Rick Cashol raced his way to the Riverview Ford Victory Lane in the DMR Auto Sales & Service Street Stock Division. Luc McLaughlin was second, while Peter Martin finished third. Chuck Morton and Geoff Tugwell won the Street Stock heat races.

Matt Crocker continued his hot hand in the Fredericton Gun Shop Sharp Shooter Division. Crocker won his heat race and the feature. Ira Farnell continued his great season with a second place feature finish, while Jeremy Doran was third. Brody Levesque won the other Sharp Shooter heat race. It was a great night for MacKenzie Brewer in the Westwood Estate Apartments Bandolero Division. Brewer followed up a heat race win with his first ever feature victory. Courtney O’Blenis finished second and Cory Hall was third.  Ashton Tucker won the other Bando heat race.

Next Saturday night Speedway 660 will be invaded by the ENDURO drivers. In their only night race of the year, they’ll run 200 laps under the lights in the Geary Woods. Pat Sharpe, from Woodstock, won the first ENDURO race just a few weeks ago.
