SCOTIA SPEEDWORLD’S WEEKLY RACING SERIES KICKS OFF 2014 CAMPAIGN THIS SUNDAY‏

Track Release

(Halifax, NS. May 21, 2014) Scotia Speedworld’s Weekly Racing Series will kick off their 27th season this Sunday at 2:00 PM.  All six Weekly Racing Series divisions will see action on the oval this Sunday. Adult tickets are $12.00; Youth tickets (8-15 years) are just $2.00 and children 7 and under are admitted for free all season at Scotia Speedworld. Tickets will be available at the gate on race day (cash only). Grandstand gates open at 12:00 noon with qualifying for all six Weekly Racing Series divisions slated to get underway at 2:00 PM.

While the checkered flag is the immediate goal, Sunday is the first opportunity for drivers on the Weekly Racing Series to gain valuable championship points. After a long winter, teams have been working around the clock to get their racing machines ready for competition for the first time since last September.

Five of the six divisions will see their champions return to defend their crowns earned one season ago. Topping the list is Dartmouth Dodge Sportsman Series Champion Darren Wallage (Oakfield), who will have a full field of the best late model drivers nipping at his bumper every lap, including 2012 champion Aaron Boutilier (Porter’s Lake). Both will be searching for their second championship in the premiere class at Scotia Speedworld.

Cole Butcher (Porter’s Lake) returns to the Strictly Hydraulics Legends division with high expectations for a third consecutive championship in the class. He will have to bring his best to the track to fend off class veterans such as “The Legend” Cy Harvey (Elmsdale), Danny Harvey (Lantz), “Miss Rawdon Rocket” Emily Meehan (Rawdon Gold Mines) and Jeff Cruickshank (Hantsport), each of whom contended for the title in 2013.

Dan Smith (Lower Sackville) will continue on his journey to re-write the history books as he searches for his third consecutive Coors Light Truck championship. It won’t be easy with returning veterans like Ryan Goldsmith (Bridgewater) and Jason Fenton (Eastern Passage) looking to upend the hat trick in 2014.

Matthew Warren (White’s Lake) will look to take his second championship in the four cylinder Thunder class, something that hasn’t been accomplished in over five years. Warren will have to fend off former division champions Dave Matthews (Kennetcook), Stevie Lively (Shubenacadie) and Tim Webster (Beaverbank), along with a slew of other drivers looking to take their first title.

Adam Meehan (Rawdon Gold Mines) begins what the team says is his final year of Hydraulics Plus Bandolero racing coming off a dominant season which saw him take six victories in 2014. With many former feature winners returning like Cole Tanner (Shubenacadie), Braden Langille (Shubenacadie) and Wyatt McCulloch (Stewiacke) and a host of hungry veterans vying for their first championship, it is bound to be a battle to the wire for the first checkered silk of 2014!

With Marc MacMillan (Glenholme) moving to the Coors Light Truck class, it opens the door for a new Lightning champion in 2014. Jorden Smith (Lakeside) had dominated the class for two seasons, but ran part time in 2013. He is back this season, along with brother Deven (Lakeside) and veterans like JR Lawson (Shubenacadie), Chevy MacDonald (Stewiacke) and “Big Daddy” Kenny Hopper, just to name a few.

The Weekly Racing Series will take the following weekend off as Scotia Speedworld hosts Maple Leaf Monster Jam on May 31st and June 1st.  The Weekly Racing Series will return to its usual 7:00 PM time slot on Friday nights starting on June 6th and will run every Friday night following for the remainder of the season.  If you’re planning on attending Monster Jam be sure to hang onto your ticket stub and you can catch the Weekly Racing Series on Friday, June 6th for just $5.00! (grandstands only)
