Gulliver Victorious in AOW Opener at Speedway Miramichi

Series Release.

It was a clear day at Speedway Miramichi, but Lightning still struck at the track as Lincoln, NB’s “Lightning” Larry Gulliver took home the Heat and the Feature win in the Summer Showdown 35, and it was on a track he hasn’t run in almost 25 years.

Gulliver started out the heat in the 5th spot and drove up through the field to take the lead with a few laps remaining. An incident at the checkers had Robert Miner in the wall. That would end his night.

When it came to the feature, Gulliver managed to make the outside line work and was able to power around “Mr. Excitement” Doug Matchett with about 10 laps to go. Joe Hoyt was able to get around Matchett for the 2nd spot. Matchett was looking forward to finishing in the top spot, but was unable to hold off the hard charging Gulliver.

Defending champ Mike Raeburn did not have a good day as an incident in practice left him with a broken axle. They got the wheel on it and went out for the heat, but the wheel came off before the green came out. He was not able to return for the feature.

Rookie Brandon Skidmore finished out the evening in the 6th spot. His only miscue was a spin in practice, but other than that, he kept the car clean and should be back on the 30th at Petty.

FINISHING ORDER

1. 51 Larry Gulliver

2. 17 Joe Hoyt

3. 75 Doug Matchett

4. 38 John Godfrey

5. 81 Cody Price

6. 4 Brandon Skidmore

7. 48 Robert Miner

8. 98 Mike Raeburn

Next Sunday, June 23, The Atlantic Open Wheel Modified Tour will be at Spud Speedway in Caribou, Maine. Joe Hoyt & Ken Deveau took the wins last season in the features. We look forward to seeing what can happen south of the border.
