Piston Cup Street Stock Race at Oyster Bed Taking Shape
Track Release
(CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – August 20, 2024) – Oyster Bed Speedway’s annual marquee race just got a whole lot more interesting.
The high-banked oval in Oyster Bed Bridge will play host to the 14th annual Piston Cup during the Labour Day Monday Special on September 2, the track’s biggest and most popular event every year.
Shaping up to be one of the biggest and richest Street Stock races in the region, the highly-coveted, open-invitational 100-lap Street Stock race will see its purse skyrocket with quite possibly the highest stakes in the race’s history.
After years of awarding $1000 to the winner, Oyster Bed Speedway will now award $1250 to the next driver who first takes the checkered flag at the end of 100 green flag laps and gets their name written on the Piston Cup. The top five finishing positions have a total of $2700 up for grabs, with the total base purse featuring well over $4000 if 15 or more cars register. Along with all of that comes multiple contingency prizes totalling upwards of $800, lap money ($50 per lap – all laps sold equals $5000), and $100 in tow money for every mainland car that registers and shows up.
The Piston Cup was first introduced in 2009 in honour of a late friend of the racing community and has since welcomed Street Stock stars from across the Maritimes who seek to etch their name on a prestigious trophy. Past race winners include Doug MacEwen, Late Model star Darren MacKinnon, multi-time Street Stock champions Colton Ford and Amanda Wheatley, and regional talent Michael Cormier. Reigning Gauthier’s Auto Repair Street Stock division champion Tyler Gauthier is the most recent winner. Not one driver has won this race more than once.
The current contingency prizes include:
- Kris Fournier RE/MAX Pole Challenge – $300
- Gauthier’s Auto Repair Hard Luck Award – $100
- Gauthier’s Auto Repair Lucky Dog Award – $100
- Phillips Auto Sales & Andy’s Tire Halfway Winner – $100
- Phillips Auto Sales & Andy’s Tire Most Laps Led – $100
- Millarboyzracin Hard Charger Award – $100
People and/or businesses interested in sponsoring a contingency prize can contact Reegan MacAulay on Facebook or by email at reegmacaulay@gmail.com.
The track is selling all 100 laps of the Piston Cup at $50 each. All lap money will be divided throughout the field so that every driver who races walks away with something.
People and/or businesses interested in purchasing laps can contact Reegan MacAulay on Facebook or by email at reegmacaulay@gmail.com.
NOTE: Drivers must register for the race to be eligible to claim contingency prizes, lap money, and tow money (mainland cars). Registrations will also help determine the car count and promotions leading into the event. The registration form can be found on the website’s rules and registrations page.
P.E.I. and New Brunswick Street Stock rules will apply for the event with the P.E.I. tire tread depth rule applying for all cars. All technical inquiries go to Robbie MacLean (robbiemaclean@hotmail.com) or Marvin Dyer (mdshop10@hotmail.com).
A random draw for the heat races will be done at the driver’s meeting on race day, and two 12-lap heat races will determine the starting lineup for the 100-lap feature. If more than two heat races are needed, that will be determined on race day.
The race will not follow under the year-long Gauthier’s Auto Repair division championship nor the A&S Scrap Metals Super Series championship, however, there will be 50 show points given to every P.E.I. car that participates.
A full competitor information package is available on the registration page.
