Greenlaw Adds Sportsman Win at 660 on SLMS Undercard
Track Release/Photo
(August 20th, 2023) – As the sun set over the Geary Woods and Speedway 660 Saturday and day transitioned to night, race fans were treated to a full card of action with many exciting and heart pounding moments. The headlining Super Late Model Series ReCar 150 presented by Wonder Auto & Tire delivered a thriller from start to finish, with a final lap shootout deciding the race. Cory Hall (#83) and Ashton Tucker (#2) left it all on the line in the closing laps, with Hall taking the victory as Tucker crossed the line second. Ryan Messer (#1) posted a strong third place run to round out the podium. Full results and a recap can be found on the Super Late Model Series website at SLMS.ca.
While the Super Late Model Series drivers were in the spotlight, action was contested in several support classes to kick-off the night at Speedway 660. With over seventy-five (75) cars in the pits, it was a busy race night that gave the large Speedway 660 crowd their money’s worth.
Drew Greenlaw (#23) continues his Speedway 660 Sportsman dominance, earning his third consecutive victory. Greenlaw drove a methodical race – falling behind early to avoid a potential incident – but he used a restart to propel his way into the lead, a lead he would never relinquish in a commanding victory. Richard Atkinson (#40) posted his best finish of the season, with a runner-up finish with Courtney O’Blenis (#48) picking up the final podium position.
Only one caution flew, which was for a single car spin for the return behind the wheel for Tony Urquhart (#11). Greenlaw also claimed the heat race victory to kick-off the evening. Eight drivers took the call for the green in the seventy-five (75) lap feature.
For Greenlaw, the win marked his twelfth (12th) career Speedway 660 Sportsman feature victory.
Justin Cole (#38) regained control over the Shur-Fit Automotive, Bumper to Bumper Street Stock division with a big victory – his third of the season. As Cole chases his first ever division championship, he was followed across the line by two former champions of the division with Riley Goodwin (#77) and Shawn Hyslop (#99) finishing second and third respectively. Kyle MacKinnon (#22) and Rob Raynes (#41) completed the top five.
Two cautions slowed the thirty-five-lap feature. The first came in the opening laps for a multi-car incident that ended the race for Rick Cashol (#54), Nick Cudmore (#87), and Bryar Ellis (#95). The second yellow was for Michael Cormier (#68) suffering a mechanical failure and coating the track with fluid. Cole would dominate the race from start to finish, leading every lap, and the Harvey driver was unbothered by any of the restarts as he comfortably re-assumed the lead each time.
Heat races were won by Cormier and Cole. Fourteen (14) cars were in attendance. It was Justin Cole’s eleventh (11th) career Speedway 660 Street Stock win.
Matt Martin (#33) scored a popular victory in the Fredericton Gun Shop Sharp Shooter division, leading wire-to-wire in the caution free race. Becoming the seventh different winner in as many races, Martin cruised to the win over Terry Lawson (#14), while Alex Gallant (#5) made a huge charge to the finish to edge Randy Titus (#75) for the final podium position. Todd Day (#4) would finish fifth.
Fifteen (15) Fredericton Gun Shop Sharp Shooter competitors were in attendance. Martin and Day claimed heat race victories. It was Martin’s sixth (6th) career Fredericton Gun Shop Sharp Shooter victory.
The Atlantic Modified Tour was in town for their third stop in the Geary Woods. Chris Wilson (#2W) and Joe Hoyt (#17) put on a great battle for the lead for much of the race, with Wilson pulling away in the final half of the race. After a pair of incidents, Wilson would cross the line in first with Yves McCray (#58) making a late charge through the field to cross the line second. After technical inspection, the win would be awarded to McCray, with Doug Matchett (#75) and Kevin Bailey (#4) rounding out the podium. Official results will be published by the Atlantic Modified Tour.
