One Month Away From Inaugural SLMS Event
Series Release
(April 13th, 2023) – As warmer weather sees winter start to fade in Atlantic Canada, the increasing temperatures comes with the final countdown to the most anticipated summer for stock car racing in decades for the region. Action fires up in one month on Canada’s East Coast, and fittingly, opening day on May 13th at Geary, New Brunswick’s Speedway 660 will also see the introduction of the highly billed Super Late Model Series – with early indications predicting a nearly thirty car field for race one.
There has been a buzz since the new series was first conceptualized last Fall – which has led to an off-season filled with anticipation greater than many drivers have experienced throughout their careers. The grind towards the SLMS debut has seen plenty of exciting developments spotlighted through the series’ rapidly growing social media channels, while the brainstorming and planning by the SLMS team has continued behind the scenes.
The strong contingent of drivers has been a huge talking point, with 25 competitors having registered as full-time drivers prior to the March 31st deadline. Nineteen of these drivers have been unveiled thus far to fans – with many track championships, big wins including 250 wins, and many other accolades on their resumes. The remainder of the roster is set to be publicized in the coming weeks. In addition to the quality list of full-time drivers, many more have indicated intentions to compete on a part-time basis, with Speedway 660 disclosing this week that they are preparing for thirty (30!) Super Late Model Series cars to be on the property come race day.
Contingency sponsors have been signing on to join the series daily, with ARbodies being the most recent contingency sponsor to be announced Wednesday afternoon. Hyperco, Five Star Bodies, Penske Racing Shocks, EIT Race Radios, Port City Racecars, and Swift Springs have all been announced as partners to date, with prizes sponsored by each organization going directly to drivers competing in Super Late Model Series events.
From a race procedure aspect, the focus has been on fair competition and the best experience and show for both drivers and fans. Series officials recently announced the addition of two special procedures which will be utilized. A passing points system will determine the starting lineup for each 150-lap feature – the first time this method will be used in Atlantic Canada – while the widely spreading “choose rule” will add a strategy element to restarts during each race.
While the first left turns remain a month away, the first public event for SLMS is in fact just over one week away! The Super Late Model Series will debut at the 47th Annual Radical SpeedSport at the Moncton Coliseum from Friday April 21st to Sunday April 23rd. Over half a dozen cars and stars will be featured at the popular show. Among the drivers who will have their fresh 2023 rides on display includes Steve Halpin (#03), Ryan Messer (#1), Dylan Gosbee (#16), Greg Proude (#29), and Kenny MacKenzie Jr (#85). Two additional drivers will have their hot rods on display – these drivers have yet to be introduced to fans yet, and will introduced in the days leading up to SpeedSport.
Start time for round one of the Super Late Model Series is 4pm on Saturday May 13th. This will mark the first race of a busy opening half of the season, with rounds two and three being held at River Glade, NB’s Petty International Raceway on Saturday June 3rd at 4pm, and Oyster Bed Bridge, PEI’s Oyster Bed Speedway on Saturday June 17that 6pm.
As the first race nears, information will continue to be announced. Closing in on race week, fans can expect an event format, a full entry list, and a race preview – with even more announcements and releases on the horizon.
