Track Release

(SYDNEY, NS – March 18th, 2021) – Management at Sydney Speedway is excited to officially release an expanded 2021 schedule that will include motorsports action on 11 weekends from May to October. The stock car season at the oval on Grand Lake Road in Sydney, Nova Scotia will kick off with a five division card on Saturday, May 15th.

The focus shifts towards local grassroots racing in the third season of the new ownership group led by Greg Dowe. The local race operations program will be overseen by former track champion Kody Quinn, who put a team together to host Winter Endurance events in February and March and will assemble the operations crew for the dozen stock car racing cards in 2021. The six divisions that see regular competition at the track will see champions crowned for the year.

Two new divisions will anchor the racing program at Sydney Speedway. Previously announced, the Thunder V6 class will be joined by the Hobby Stock Four Cylinder division. The newly announced Hobby Stock division will be comprised of domestic makes with required safety features and serve as an entry level form of competition at the track. Building rules for both of these new divisions can be found online at

The Thunder V6 class will appear on all 12 racing cards this season, including the Poogie Hache Memorial Car Show, which will take place at the speedway on Saturday, June 12th. The Thunder V6 class, along with a Demolition Derby, will take to the track in the evening following the car show. The Hobby Stock class will see ten point events throughout the season.

The Sportsman, Legend, Mini Stock and Bandolero divisions that made up the racing cards in the previous two seasons of racing at Sydney Speedway will also return to the rotation. The popular Mini Stock class will contest racing on ten cards plus have the chance to compete with the Passione Flooring & Interiors East Coast Mini Stock Tour on Saturday, June 19th. The Legend and Bandolero divisions will each contest eight races in Sydney while the top tier Late Model Sportsman class is scheduled for six races with the highlight of their season being a 100-lap feature on Thanksgiving Thunder weekend.

In addition to the Passione Flooring & Interiors East Coast Mini Stock Tour, the Maritime League of Legends Tour will return to Sydney for the first time in a decade. The Tour will make the trip across the Canso Causeway on Saturday, June 5th for a 50-lap feature, the third of 11 races on their cross-Maritime schedule.

The Thanksgiving Thunder and Sydney Spooktacular events return in October, albeit it on different weekends than 2020. After consultation with other race tracks and Sydney’s participation in the Maritime Short Track Summit, the consideration for other late season race dates was included when placing dates and divisions on the schedule. The Thanksgiving Thunder will take place a weekend earlier in 2021, from October 1st to 3rd, while the Sydney Spooktacular will close the regular racing season both in Sydney and in the Maritime Provinces on Saturday, October 30th.

Two Demolition Derby events appear on the schedule for June 12th and October 30th with the possibility of an additional one being added through the Summer.

Please note, the Cape Breton Street Stock Association, the sanctioning body for Street Stock racing on Cape Breton Island, is still finalizing their plans for the 2021 season and no dates have been confirmed at Sydney Speedway from the Association as of press time.
