Kevin Tucker Takes Kids Day at Speedway Miramichi
Track Release/Photo
Speedway Miramichi’s first annual Kids Day was a memorable one, both on and off the track. Plenty of activites were held for our youngest fans, meanwhile the action on the track was intense and at times heated.
It appeared to be Kevin Tucker’s day in Demo action. Tucker picked up the win in every preliminary race – the Dash for Cash, Back-Up, Heat, and Figure 8 races, while Amber Sickles wheeled his car to a checkered flag in the Powder Puff race.
However, in the final demo, it would once again be a Santa Fe being too much to handle. Jacob Smith, in his #29 Santa Fe, held off all challengers to take the win on Kids Day. Tucker came up a single spot short of a clean sweep on the day, finishing second, while Mitch Brideau rounded out the podium positions.
The Mini Stock division contested a 50 lap feature, and it was JR Lawson coming from the back to take the lead and the win. Chantel Ackles appeared poised to make a move late in the race, but just couldn’t get close enough and had to settle for second. Mathieu Mallett rounded out the podium.
Chantel Ackles was the winner of the 10 lap heat race.
The Atlantic Modified Tour feature was the talk of the speedway on Saturday. Following tech, it would be defending track champion Doug Matchett earning his first victory in two years, besting a twelve car field. Kim Hallihan and Brandon Skidmore rounded out the podium. Travis Conroy and Steven Curtis rounded out the top 5.
For Matchett, the win did not come without adversity in what was a wild feature. On the 4th lap of the race, contact between Matchett and Yves McCray on the backstretch resulted in McCray spinning into the infield. Tempers flared on the track, with both drivers expressing their frustrations with each other. Both drivers would be relegated to the rear of the field for their actions, but damage would ultimatley end McCray’s night.
Matchett won his 10 lap heat race to start the day, with Zean Dutcher originally crossing the line first in his heat.
Not to be outdone, the Street Stock feature had some drama unfold. After pitting under caution to change a flat tire, Brad MacLean came from the back of the field to catch race leader James Matchett. The pair battled hard for many laps, before contact brought out the caution, resulting in both drivers going back to the rear. Both drivers worked their way back through the field, but it would be MacLean beating Chris Wilson on a late race restart to cross the line in first, with Matchett finishing 3rd.
MacLean also captured the win during the 10 lap heat race.
*Note – The podium results for the Street Stock feature are UNDER REVIEW, and therefore the results remain UNOFFICIAL*
In Dukes action, technical inspection awarded the victory to Robert Legere, with Fred Marsland taking home second. The 20 lap feature saw Legere and Darcy O’Neill had a fun battle all race long right up to the checkred flag.
O’Neill had crossed the line first in the 10 lap heat race.
A pre-race autograph session, kids rides, a candy dash, frisbee toss, and a custom t-shirt contest were among the activities held as part of Kids Day! The Kids Day festivities were a huge hit! Special thanks to all the drivers who took part and made it such a memorable day!
