Cape Breton Motorsports Facility Named Sydney Speedway for 2019 Re-Opening

(SYDNEY, NS – February 21st, 2019) – The 1/4-mile paved oval located in Sydney, Nova Scotia will once again be known simply as Sydney Speedway. Led into this new era by local businessman and racing enthusiast Greg Dowe, the track’s name will honor the location of the facility.

The facility has seen several different owners and names since its opening in 1975, including a short stretch in the late 80s as Sydney Speedway. Dowe hopes to build on the rich racing and motorsports tradition that has been built in the city over the past four decades.

“We looked at a number of different names for the track but kept coming back to Sydney Speedway,” said Dowe on the decision of the name. “Our goal is to have a facility that puts us on the map with race teams and fans alike. We believe with having Sydney directly in the name that it will resonate with those within the motorsports community both within our Province and those who come from away.”

A new logo has been created for the launch. The logo features a red maple leaf along with Cape Breton Island cut out of a black and white checkered flag. A red dot on the checkered map of the Island points to the location of Sydney.

A social media presence is currently being built along with a new website. Once completed, fans will be able to access all the “need to know” information on the webpage at Sydney Speedway will have a presence on a number of major social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat with the username @SydneySpeedCA.

The next step for the race track is for management to put together a race day staff along with a 2019 schedule. With most racing schedules around Atlantic Canada now released, the task at hand is to put divisions together with dates that do not conflict with other major events in the region.

“We want teams and fans to be able to visit Cape Breton and experience Sydney Speedway and not miss a major event at their local track,” said Dowe regarding the upcoming season’s schedule. “We are planning on three to five motorsports events that will include numerous stock car racing divisions, giving them each a chance to race in the Sydney Speedway spotlight. Those date and division announcements will be coming very shortly, and we are still targeting an early July opening weekend.”

Sydney Speedway is seeking individuals interested in helping out at the track this season. The track has openings in all fields, from race operations to front of house and everything in between. Individuals interested in applying for a position at the speedway can contact Greg Dowe.
