Dunlop Wins Miramichi Battle, Ferguson Captures Second Eastern Super Mini Cup Title

Series Release

(MISCOUCHE, PE – October 17th, 2018) – Jacob Dunlop of Hampton, Prince Edward Island laid claim to a season high third Eastern Super Mini Cup Series feature victory Saturday at Speedway Miramichi. The rookie driver raced to the win in the Concept Drilling 15 Season Finale to cap off the 2018 season.

While Dunlop was racing to the checkered flag, Mark Ferguson (Saint John, NB) clinched the Eastern Super Mini Cup Series championship after crashing in the heat race and not starting the final race of the year.

Dunlop set a quick pace early in the 15-lap feature after a caution riddled heat race which was also won by the Series’ Rookie of the Year. Logan Dawson (Tyne Valley, PE), after sliding into Ferguson’s car in the heat race, hopped into his father Dan’s car for the feature and edged out “Old Man” Donnie McNeil (Richmond, PE) for the second place spot. The two battled back and forth in the waning laps of the Concept Drilling 15 with the No. 00 getting the edge at the finish. Dave Griffin backed up his fourth place finish a week prior with another fourth place finish to end off the season while rookie Randy Wilson completed the top five.

Ferguson and Dawson’s No. 88 sustained crash damage in the heat and could not start the main feature. Kirk Sheasgreen (Miramichi, NB) looked forward to racing at his home race track but mechanical issues following the opening laps of first practice plagued the No. 40 team and prevented him from racing on the afternoon.

For the No. 41, it is his second championship in three seasons after winning the title in an abbreviated 2016 year.

Dunlop will finish second overall in the standings and receive the Rookie of the Year Award. McNeil finished 12 points short of the runner up spot in the championship with freshmen Wilson and Logan Dawson completing the top five in the standings.
