DARTMOUTH, NS (October 24, 2017) – The 1967 fully restored stock car dubbed ‘Heart of a Champion’ has another bullet point in its impressive resume; this past summer it helped raise awareness and, together with Steele Mazda, $3,700.00 for SPCA Nova Scotia.
The cheque presentation was covered by CTV Morning Live and co-host Cyril Lunney and attended by Greg Sewart, an inductee in the Canadian and Maritime Motorsports Hall of Fame’s and a two-time champion in the 1967 Chevelle. Sewart, now retired from his legendary racing career was among those who helped restore the car earlier this year to its now pristine state.
Steele Mazda is the primary sponsor of the restoration, using the project to help raise awareness for its ‘Family Matters’ campaign and for SPCA Nova Scotia. Sewart traveled with the 1967 Chevelle this year to race tracks and car shows throughout Nova Scotia and New Brunswick to visit with fans and to help raise awareness and funds for SPCA Nova Scotia.
The cheque was presented to Courtney Barber, Director of Marketing & Communications for SPCA Nova Scotia, by Sewart and Patrick Lawrence, General Manager of Steele Mazda.

“We are thrilled to be partnered with Steele Mazda on this journey to create awareness on the need for support of companion animals in our community,” said Barber. “It is so wonderful to collaborate with community partners that understand our pets are an important part of the family unit too. We are overwhelmed by the response and support of the racing community and proud to be part of this initiative.”
Sewart is pleased the restoration project was even more meaningful than creating awareness for motorsports heritage in our region, which was its original intent.
“On behalf of everyone associated with Heart of a Champion, it’s been our pleasure to fundraise selling t-shirts and decals for SPCA Nova Scotia,” said Sewart. “The SPCA is a perfect fit for us with so many racing and car fans being pet lovers. We appreciate their enthusiasm and the support of all our sponsors, especially Steele Mazda, and hope to raise even more next year.”
Lawrence is pleased to have provided the corporate support that drove the initiative for both SPCA Nova Scotia and Heart of a Champion.
“We are happy to partner with Heart of a Champion to present this cheque to SPCA Nova Scotia,” said Lawrence. “Family really does matter to us and our pets are part of our families. Racing is such a family-oriented sport that it all seemed to be a natural fit for us.”
