The 2017 Atlantic Championships at the CENTRE For Speed outside of Shediac, New Brunswick kick off Saturday with the Sportsman, Mini Stock and Bandolero classes taking centre stage.

Jacob Logan, who won the Sportsman feature in 2016 as a rookie, will be back to defend his championship on Saturday. The task is far from easy though, as he’ll have to fight for the Sportsman 100 crown with three-time event champion Racin’ Remi Gaudet, Speedway 660 champion John Rankin, Parts for Trucks Pro Stock Tour competitor Harry Ross White, former International champion Laurie Cormier, rookie Curtis Collins and former Scotia Speedworld Sportsman champions Pete Miller and Aaron Boutilier, among others.

The Sportsman entry list, as of Thursday evening, features 17 cars. Also included on the pre-entry list includes Nova Scotia’s Joey Livingstone, Alex Johnson, Andrew Starks and a returning Ross Lewis. New Brunswick’s Bert Cormier, Brady Creamer, Kyle Campbell, Marcel LeBlanc, Dan Duke (driving for Dan Bourque) and Robert Raynes (driving for Ryan Raynes) will look to keep the title in the province.

The 100-lap Sportsman race has provided some of the most exciting finishes in recent Atlantic Championships and with the field that is coming together, 2017 should be no exception.

The 2011 winner and reigning Scotia Speedworld Thunder champion Dave Matthews will be in the field looking to stop the streak as will Petty International Raceway’s runner up Mike Edwards.

A strong contingent from Prince Edward Island will also make the trek to the CENTRE For Speed. Mitchell Arsenault, Coady Palmer, Matt Watson, Devin Gallant, Cody Byrne, Harley Cornish and Jake Rodgers are among those looking to cross the Confederation Bridge and take the title from Nova Scotia for the first time in over five years.

Sophomore Civic star Jesse Deveau swept Lake Doucette Motor Speedway two weeks ago and will look to do the same on Saturday afternoon in Grand Barachois. In addition to Matthews and Lawson, Deveau will have to keep rookies Darren Flemming and Neil Miousse, who is driving for Bob Landry, behind him.

Tyson Donovan and Michael Savoie will look to haul from the North Shore of New Brunswick to bring the title back to their home province.

If Josh Langille does not make the trek to the Lobster Capital, we are guaranteed a new champion as Braden Langille and Ashton Tucker, the most recent champions behind Langille, have moved up to the Pro Stock ranks.
