OBS Surf & Turf Street Stock Showdown Edition

It’s being billed as one of the biggest Street Stock Races East of Ontario and it’s coming to Oyster Bed Speedway this Saturday night. The Maritime Street Stock Showdown will feature 37 pre-registered drivers from across the Maritime Provinces competing for the 30 open spots for the 100 lap Feature. The final field will be set from time trials and heat races.

Fans that are 15 years of age and under they will enjoy free admission to the track and the 50-50 draw will be benefiting the QEH Pediatrics Unit. Once on site a full day of festivities are planned with the grandstands opening at 2pm followed by a kids friendly fan zone opening at 3pm. Among the many activities planned are face painting, a bouncy castle, a fire truck display and the Discover Kia zone with an area to have your favorite drivers # heat pressed onto your t-shirt. Along with an on track autograph session with our Street Stock Drivers.

At 5 o’clock the first round of time trials will begin for the Street Stock showdown with the four fastest qualifiers advancing to the big show without having to turn another lap before the feature.

Following the time trials the remaining entries will be split into 4, 12 lap heat races with the top 5 in each heat race advancing, with the remaining cars fighting it out in a last chance qualifier for the remaining 6 spots. With 20 laps scheduled for the final qualifying race the final few laps of that race should get interesting for those final few spots.

For the six cars that advance via the last chance qualifier they could be completing green lap number 133 of the day if they stay on the lead lap for the Feature. That will be a tremendous strain and test on these race cars and drivers. Finding that balance between patience and urgency not to fall behind early will be tough for many drivers. Things should get even more interesting once the competition caution at lap 70 flies, separating the lead lap and lapped cars and erasing any lead the leaders may have built on the rest of the field. This will hopefully set up for the fastest number of cars on the night to shoot it out for the final 30 laps. For some of our drivers who haven’t won a “Big Race” or Championship the nerves may factor in late. Even the slightest of errors could make the difference between winning and losing. So far this season almost every Street Stock race has been decided by inches and I know every fan is hoping this one will too.

The Maritime Street Stock Showdown has all the potential of going down as one of the biggest races at Oyster Bed Speedway. My hat is off to Tom Nicholls and his crew at BPMS for taking on this huge endeavor. Good luck to all involved, and as both a fan and an announcer – I can’t wait. Stay tuned for a further look into the big race when I reveal my top contenders for the Inaugural Showdown.
