Oyster Bed Speedway, in Oyster Bed Bridge, PEI to host the largest Street Stock race payout ever in Atlantic Canada this summer.

The Maritime Street Stock Showdown carries a Total Purse payout of $7,800 with $1,500 going to the race winner.

Pre-registration perks bring total payout to nearly $14,000 for event.

The 100 lap showdown will go Saturday, June 24th at 6 pm. The event is open to all Street Stock cars and Scotia Speedworld’s truck class. It is an invitational event and a non-points night for the PEI street stock cars.

More information has been released for the inaugural Maritime Street Stock Showdown, set to take place on Saturday, June 24th at Oyster Bed Speedway in Oyster Bed Bridge, PE.

There will be a practice session Friday evening, June 23rd from 5-9pm for the Street stock cars and Scotia trucks only. The rain date for the event is Sunday June 25th at 2pm.

The event which is being put on by promoter Tom Nicholls of BPMS (Big Poppas Multi-Services) commented “I have had conversations with most of the other tracks be it owners and/or tech directors that either run weekly or bi-weekly racing programs and have asked if they will give their street stock and truck classes this week-end off so they can come and attend this event. The hope is that they will.”

“One of the main objectives in organizing the Street Stock Event of the Year was to remove as many costs possible, so the racers will show up and race. We have eliminated bridge and ferry fees for those who pre-register early. Then toss in the free gas, free drivers admission and a minimum payout of $100 which is close to a regular night feature win at any race track and it reduces most of the racers costs.” The race winner will receive $1500 which is only $200 less than a 100 lap win on the prestigious Maritime Parts For Trucks Pro Stock Tour.

The Drivers of each registered car will receive their:

  • $25 pit admission free
  • $20 Inaugural event t-shirt free
  • Free bridge passes for the first 20 Off-Island cars to register ($63)
  • Free ferry passes for the first 5 Sydney area cars from the now closed CBMMS to register ($97)
  • For the first 40 cars to register they will receive $25 of free fuel
  • The minimum that a driver in the 30 car field can go home with in the purse payout is $100 in the main event 100 lap race.

Any Driver wanting to compete in the event must pre-register. The cost to pre-register for the event is $25 per car and it is the only way to compete in the event. “We need to know the car count in advance for items such as planning the evening, ordering t-shirts, printing programs, etc.” Registration will open on Sunday, February 12th and close on June 1st.

The tentative race procedures in place for the event will be similar to that of past Maritime Pro-Stock events. Time Trials will advance the starting 4 positions, the 4 Heat Races will see the top 5 in each heat advance and a Last Chance Qualifier will advance the top 4 to take the first 28 positions. The final 2 starting positions to make up the 30 car field will provide a unique twist when a fan draw will determine starting spots 29 and 30 of the non-qualifiers.

“This will be a history making event. We are aiming to attract up to 50 cars and put over 3000 people in the stands”.

He noted “Oyster Bed Speedway Ownership is supportive of what it is that we collectively want to accomplish with this inaugural event. They have held the admission price for the event at their normal rate of $15 per adult and have dropped the youth rate for this event, so All youths and kids Under 15 years of age will get into the event free”. In addition, Speedway Ownership will also be donating their portion of the 50/50 draw to a charity of choice in which Nicholls has selected the QEH Children’s’ Ward.

“I am really excited about this event. This will be the biggest street stock race ever in the Maritimes. This will become the premiere street stock event in future years. It will be the first of its nature carrying such a massive purse payout for street stock drivers yet will have room to grow in the future. Street Stock racing in the Maritimes is arguably some of the best racing. It is a product that breeds intense competition and one that is extremely exciting for fans to watch. It is far time that this class and its drivers get to grab the spotlight in Atlantic Canada and a race of this magnitude will provide that spotlight.” noted Nicholls.

A website has been launched www.streetstockshowdown.com Pre-registration begins Sunday, February 12th at 10am. All information can be found on the website. The rules package will be released on Friday, February 10th on Tim’s Corner and on the website.

As for the Major Sponsor of the event, Nicholls expects to make an announcement in the near future, “It is something I have been working on diligently and it just doesn’t happen overnight. You can have the package on the table for 2-4 weeks before a decision is made before you can move on to the next Company. I am confident that we will have one soon. With what this event will bring for a Major Sponsor with an expected capacity crowd, it is an excellent opportunity for a Corporation at a reasonably low cost to the sponsoring Company”.
