TCM Three Stars + Weekend Agenda – September 8th, 2016

The 16th weekend of racing in Atlantic Canada for 2016 produced four race cards at three different race tracks and while it was one of the lightest weekends on the schedule for the season thus far, it provided some great action. While we took in all four days of racing on the Labour Day weekend and saw some first time winners on the year at Scotia Speedworld and some incredibly tight racing at Oyster Bed Speedway, the weekend belonged to Speedway 660 and Speedweekend 2016.

Speedweekend 2016 lived up to all expectations. The crowd that gathered on Sunday was the biggest crowd seen for the Pro Stock 250 in recent years. The racing throughout the weekend was excellent and provided exciting action from the first heat on Saturday to the checkered flag Sunday evening. The corn boil and Mucky Fingers concert got the weekend kicked off in fine fashion and, not to mention, over 600 campers packed the campground for a weekend to remember!

So, who were the stars of the show?! While there were over a hundred teams that packed the pits across seven different divisions, we have narrowed our selection down to three.

With that said, here are the TCM Three Stars for the Labour Day Weekend of 2016.

Third Star

Ryan Messer of Harvey, New Brunswick

When it looked like Ryan Messer was heading virtually out of control towards the beach in a number of the early cautions during the A.E. McKay Builders 150, many counted out the newly minted Martin’s Home Heating Sportsman champion.

Lesson of the weekend, never ever count out “big orange.”

Through a rough and tumble first 50 or so laps in the A.E. McKay Builders 150, Messer dodged a number of bullets. The #1 car even spun out a couple times trying to avoid incidents in front of him.

In the closing laps of the race, it appeared Messer would finish off his Speedway 660 season off with a third place run before Drew Greenlaw and Colby Smith went spinning into the infield dirt off Turn Two.

On the final restart, the 15 year old Messer had to battle veteran driver Laurie Cormier for the win. Cormier gave the youngster all he could handle, including a look on the inside coming out of Turn Four coming to the checkered flag but to no avail.

The A.E. McKay Builders 150 win is the biggest win of Messer’s career that already includes a Sportsman, Atlantic Modified Tour and Bandolero championship along with dozens of feature wins. His Sportsman accomplishments alone in 2016 make him a prime candidate for the TCM Power Performer of the Year.

Etching his name alongside the likes of Dave O’Blenis and Colby Smith as recent winners of the A.E. McKay Builders 150 and to do it in come from behind fashion like he did is enough to earn Ryan Messer his second TCM Third Star appearance of 2016.

Second Star

Joey Doiron of Berwick, Maine

Joey Doiron ran a pretty textbook race to capture his first McLaughlin Roof Trusses 250 at Speedway 660 and the biggest pay day of his career.

Doiron started tenth on the field and he, along with Joey Polewarczyk Jr., drove their way towards the front of the field. Prior to pit stops and just past the halfway point, Doiron battled with Cassius Clark for the lead, even taking the lead for a lap before surrendering the lead back.

The final lead change of the night took place on Lap 198 when Doiron got around Joey Pole for the top spot. Doiron ran a smart race by picking his way up through the field and being patient throughout, taking the lead at the right time and holding a comfortable lead through the last 50 laps to take the win. In fact, the #73 JBJ Machine car came home without a visible scratch on it en route to the $17,700 payout (or just over $13k USD after exchange).

Now, the question is, does Doiron and team make a return trip across the border to compete in the Mike Stevens Memorial at Petty Raceway in two weeks to not only battle for the $5,500 top prize but the extra “big winner bonus” of $5,000 put up by Carnahan Property Management?! Stay tuned…

Until then, for his first win in the Geary woods and his first McLaughlin Roof Trusses 250 triumph, Joey Doiron receives the second star on the TCM Three Stars for the week.

First Star

Sam Rogers of Lower Onslow, Nova Scotia

Okay, okay, we know what you are thinking, Tim’s Corner Motorsports sponsored the Bandolero Blast on Speedweekend, so whoever won was going to end up here.

Did you see the TCM Bandolero Blast? If not, you need to check out JDM Race Broadcasting and watch the show put on by these kids and the eventual winner over 30 laps in Sam Rogers.

We already knew Rogers, a second year Bandolero driver from Lower Onslow, Nova Scotia could drive, he has won seven races already this season. To come to Speedway 660, a fast race track he had never seen before, and drive to victory lane was a feat in its own.

Rogers had a great battle early in the race with “The Flying Frenchman” Michael Cormier as the two crossed each other over like it was going out of style for third behind Braden Langille and Josh Langille.

Once a puff of blue smoke came out of Braden Langille’s car into Turn One following a caution – the race was on!

Rogers finally solved Cormier for what was then second and got by Josh Langille in the late laps of the race to put himself first under the feet of Tim Elliott to score his first trip to Riverview Ford Lincoln Victory Lane in his first attempt in the Geary woods.

Like Messer, Rogers is making a great case as to why he should be the TCM Power Performer of the Year with wins at Scotia Speedworld, Petty International Raceway and now Speedway 660. Rogers will also take a step closer to the track title at Scotia Speedworld on Friday as he leads the Outlaw points at the track. In addition, Rogers leads the Canadian standings for the Bandolero Outlaw class over Josh Langille, which also has him 10th overall in the world in his age group.

For his win in the Tim’s Corner Motorsports Bandolero Blast and the show put on throughout the 30-lap main feature, Sam Rogers receives the top star on the TCM Three Stars of the week!

WEEKEND AGENDA

The Weekend Agenda takes a bit of a different look this year, but will give you a quick glance at the basics. If a track is racing, you’ll see the track name and location in green and if a track is not running an event on a weekend, their name and location will be red. The line proceeding will display the divisions running on the weekend and a start time, or a date of when the next event is at the track.

Blue indicates a race track has completed their season for 2016!
