Waterfield Dominates Gillis Home Hardware 100 – Kyle Reid Takes NAPA Sportsman Title

Shawn Waterfield sent a statement going into the NAPA Sportsman Series off-season by winning the final race of the season, leading all 100 laps from the pole in the Gillis Home Hardware 100 at Cape Breton Miners Memorial Speedway.

Waterfield finished ahead of rookie Lynden MacDougall, who scored his best career Sportsman finish with the second place run. Kyle Reid took third within the last five laps of the race after Ross Lewis fumbled the position late in the race. Lewis held onto fifth, behind Victoria, Newfoundland’s Shane Coffen.

Reid captured the NAPA Sportsman Series championship, one year after his brother Chris won the championship. Reid finished ahead of Darren Price and Waterfield in the standings. Price was running fourth in the feature before blowing a rear end within the final 20 laps of the feature. Joey Rudderham finished ninth, which was enough to clinch the Rookie of the Year on the series.

The race featured five cautions and took 44 minutes to complete.

The Cape Breton Trailer Sales Street Stock division Saf-way Auto Parts 25 was won by Mike MacLeod as the 2014 champion bested the incoming 2015 titlist Vance MacDonald and Brennan MacInnis. MacLeod led all 25 laps, one caution slowed the race which took 15 minutes to run.

Results – 1 – #17 Mike MacLeod, 2 – #27 Vance MacDonald, 3 – #26 Brennan MacInnis, 4 – #00 Jeff Adamsson, 5 – #51 Matt Noblett, 6 – #33 Shawn Cole, 7 – #23 Jamie Vassallo, 8 – #41 Alan Noblett

The closest point battle of the afternoon came down to the Atlantic Cat/Hewitt Rentals Mini Stock drivers, where Kody Quinn entered the final feature after the heat race just one single point up on JR Lawson. The two battled at the front for many of the early laps of the Ramsay’s Honda 50 before Lawson set sail up front to take his first championship at the track. “The Mayor of Cleveland” Art McNamara was second with Dartmouth’s Kyle MacMillan third.

The field featured 23 cars, had four caution periods and took 30 minutes to run.

The event served as the final point race for the Cape Breton Miners Memorial Speedway season, but fans should keep their eyes peeled for an announcement from the track in regards to a new event announcement for the October 17th/18th weekend.
