Dulux Paints Three Stars – Weekend One of 2018

The popular Three Stars selection returns to TimsCorner.ca this season thanks to the folks at Dulux Paints and Dulux Paints Bayers Lake. The Dulux Paints Three Stars honors three drivers who put up a performance from the weekend previous, on or off the track, that is worth some extra kudos.

While Dylan Blenkhorn made most of the headlines outside of Mother Nature’s soggy Sunday weather, we wanted to dive a bit deeper and shine the light on three drivers who also parked their cars in victory lane. As the case may be for this weekend, these first three star selections won races in different divisions in different provinces over the Victoria Day Long Weekend.

Here are the Dulux Paints Three Stars for Weekend No. One of 2018 in Atlantic Canada

THIRD STAR – ROBBIE MACEWEN OF SHERWOOD, PE

Robbie MacEwen took home the inaugural Pro Stock house division feature at Oyster Bed Speedway on Monday to earn him a spot on the Dulux Paints Three Stars on Weekend No. One.

MacEwen chased Darren MacKinnon for most of the event before getting to the inside of the No. 18 as the two waged war in the second half of the race. A caution flag with two laps to go slowed the pair and set up a final restart. With no lane choice for the leader, MacKinnon started on the inside of MacEwen. With the roles reversed, MacEwen was able to power his No. 40 Maritime Steel Chevrolet around the outside and to the win in the 50-lap feature.

If it wasn’t for running short on fuel on Saturday night at Petty International Raceway, we might also be talking about a top five or better in the Maritime Pro Stock Tour opener too. Still, tenth place for a part time driver on the Series in a rough and tumble Lucas Oil 150 isn’t a bad way to kick off the year!

SECOND STAR -ROSS THORNE OF CHANCE COVE, NL

How could we go through this Dulux Paints Three Stars segment without mentioning Ross Thorne’s first Eastbound Park win?

The Sportsman division at the track is full of talented drivers. The likes of Josh Collins, Shane Coffen,  Ches Cole and most recent champions Wayne Walsh and Jason Groves just scratch the surface of the top runners in the class week in and week out. Thorne bested them all in the second of two 35-lap features on Monday for his first win since the track in Avondale was dirt.

Now, if you are keeping score, Ross now has the first checkered flag of the season in the Thorne camp. While Sara has plenty of wins over the past three seasons, she now trails her father in 2018 by one. One can only wonder how that Monday night supper conversation went!

FIRST STAR – PATRICIA TAYLOR OF SALISBURY, NB

Patricia Taylor took home her first feature victory at Petty International Raceway last Friday night, but to say it was an easy trek to victory lane is an understatement.

Practice did not go well for Taylor leading into Friday. A steering issue put the car into the wall in the first session of the year and three laps into the Open Practice the week before saw the engine blow apart. Getting to the track was a battle in itself but the Chase the Racecars Team was ready to make it happen on Friday night.

After winning her heat race, Taylor started up front in the 30-lap feature. Everything went to plan until Tim Webster began closing in on Taylor. A caution with eight laps to go would see the pair line up side by side. Taylor got the best of Webster on the restart and established a gap the reigning champion could not close.

Victory lane was an emotional one, as it is with any first time winner. With double points on the line on Friday combined with Webster and third place finisher Mike Weagle not committing to the full schedule at Petty International Raceway, it will also give Taylor an advantage in the standings heading into their next event on June 2nd.
